Popular Shampoo Recalled Urgently After Deadly Bacteria Found—1 in 10 at Risk

Over 1,000 Bottles of Popular Shampoo Recalled After Deadly Bacteria Discovered
Henkel, the German-based manufacturer behind the Tec Italy haircare brand, has issued a voluntary recall of 1,068 bottles of Tec Italy Shampoo for Dry and Damaged Hair after lab tests revealed contamination with Klebsiella oxytoca — a potentially deadly bacterium.
What’s the Danger?
Klebsiella oxytoca is usually harmless when found in the body’s digestive system. But if it spreads to other areas — such as the bloodstream or lungs — it can trigger serious and even life-threatening infections including:
- Pneumonia
- Sepsis
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Severe abdominal pain and vomiting
Health officials warn that in severe cases, bloodstream infections caused by this bacterium can be fatal in 10–20% of patients, especially those with weakened immune systems.
Recall Details: What You Need to Know
The recall, issued in cooperation with the FDA, affects shampoo bottles distributed from a facility in Mexico to U.S. salons via:
- C&R Beauty
- Caesar’s Professional Items Inc.
- Vero Beauty Distributors
Affected Product Details:
- Lot Code: 1G27542266
- Expiration Date: May 27, 2027
While Tec Italy products are commonly sold through major retailers like Walmart, Target, and Amazon, this recalled batch was sold directly to salons, where it may have been purchased in person by customers.
No Reported Infections Yet, But Caution Urged
As of now, no illnesses have been reported. Still, both Henkel and the FDA urge consumers to take the recall seriously:
- Stop using the product immediately
- Check the bottle for the lot number
- Contact Henkel or your distributor for a refund or return instructions
What Is a Class II Recall?
The FDA has labeled this a Class II recall, meaning the product poses a moderate risk of health problems. While not considered life-threatening for most, there is a chance of temporary or medically reversible harm, particularly for vulnerable individuals.
Not Tec Italy’s First Safety Issue
This incident follows a previous recall in January 2025 involving Tec Italy Tonico Shampoo, which was pulled due to possible E. coli contamination. The repeated concerns have raised questions about quality control at the brand’s manufacturing facilities.
Stay Informed — Stay Safe
Though Klebsiella oxytoca infections are rare — with fewer than 100 cases reported annually in the U.S. — they can escalate quickly without treatment. If you experience symptoms like fever, chills, shortness of breath, or painful urination after using the product, seek medical help immediately.
