4-Year-Old Girl Found Eating Chocolate After Being Trapped In Home With Bodies Of her Mom And Young Brother

There are times when tragedy strikes and we can’t even fathom the level of difficulties that people must’ve been facing. This was seen recently in a New York home.
When police were asked to do a wellness check on a home, they found a four-year-old girl inside the home alive but her mother and eight-year-old brother had died. When they found the girl, she was on a bed eating chocolate and they thought she probably survived on it.
38-year-old Lisa Cotton and her son, eight-year-old Nazir Millien were found dead inside of the home after the landlord made some calls. Lisa’s 71-year-old father, Hubert Cotton got a call from the landlord asking of Lisa had moved.
The father said: “I had been trying to call her for days and she never answered. I figured she didn’t answer me because she didn’t want me to talk to me.”
Lisa’s oldest daughter was sent to the apartment to check on them when she found what had happened. Nazir, who had been born prematurely and was disabled was slumped over in a chair deceased.
Hubert said: “When she came in, [Nazir] was slumped over.”
They went looking for Lisa and found the four-year-old girl, Promise on her mother’s bed, ‘feeding herself with chocolate.’
Hubert said: “She picked her up and ran out and called the police.” He also said that they saw bugs crawling on the boy’s body.
It’s unclear how long the mother and son were dead before they were found but neighbors had been reporting a foul order that smelled like ‘death’ for weeks.
An anonymous 911 call sent police for a welfare check but nobody answered the door when they arrived. Neighbors told the officers they hadn’t seen Lisa or the children in two weeks but the officers did not have a reason to break the door down because they didn’t notice smells or hear any noises.
A neighbor said: “[The police] said they’d be back in a few days. One of the social workers said she was trying to get a court order to have the door broken in.”
Neighbors had also said they heard screaming coming from the apartment for a number of days. Neither of the bodies showed signs of trauma. Hubert said that the police feel she may have died of cardiac arrest and her son starved to death.
Promise is thought to have kept herself alive by eating chocolate found in the home and she was in stable condition when they took her to the hospital. Hubert is now looking after her in his home and is mourning Naizer. He described the boy as being ‘so small. I held him in my palm. Like a bird, like a young bird.’
Hubert feels that Promise may have been traumatized after living with the body of her mother and brother for a few days. He said she ‘hasn’t said anything’ but will often look at him like she knows something.
Hubert is distressed over having to bury his daughter and grandson. He said: “I’m sorry. . . . Two of them. How am I going to get the money? To bury both of them?”
The man who lived above Lisa said: “The landlord hadn’t done wellness checks, people had called, neighbors called.
“It just smells like rat infested . . . the exterminator said the same thing — the smell is similar to rats and even death.”
